Hydrangea macrophylla subsp. macrophylla (garden type Hortensias)

Moderately tall, stout growth, large head, serrated sepals, vivid deep blue with feeding in acid soil to Rose Madder
in chalk. Attractive autumn flower tints. AM 1957 Mid season flowering, favors shady position.

Double serrated-sepalled amethyst-shot Flax Blue or pink flowers in small heads produced with unusal freedom from
August until frost. Shoots stout but moderate height, leaves very thick, deep green.

Sky blue or pink in chalk soil, moderate, slender growth,shapely individual flowers with serrated sepals. Very free
flowering, prefers light shade.
- 'HORNLI'
1952 Swiss introduction named after a mountain east of Zurich. Dense inflorescens 11-13 cm wide. which are relatively
large compared to heighth of plant. Rarely taller than 40 cm. and can spread twice its height. Sterile florets
oval-acuminate, 4 - 5, clearly separate. Flower heads turn greyish pink and crimsom in autumn. A pretty and unusual
plant, essential for enthusiasts.

A compact Hortensia, deep blue or deep pink, or violet. Free flowering, stouter than "Foch". Prefers sheltered,
shady position.

Good consistant lavender blue hortensia, small compact infloresecense carried on tall, supple stems.The four sepals
of the sterile florets are well-spaced, and always entire . Once established, the plant produces many new branches
and dependable quantities of flowers. Early flowering, and thrives best in slightly shaded position.
- 'PARZIVAL'
Rose Madder to crimson-pink or purple to deep blue, numerous small heads, serrated sepals. Flowers last well in the
shade and tint attractively in autumn. Moderate growth. AM l922.
- 'PIAMINIA'
Large pink (bight carmine red) flowers on slightly irregularflattened hemispheres, 0-12 cm wide with denticulate
sepals of different sizes, on dwarf plant 2/3 to 1 M.. Small growing hydrangea with small leaves.

Purple, dark blue, or intense dark velvety red drawf habit. An indispensable variety for the favorable garden,

Hydrangea involucrata
- H. Involucrata
The species grows three to six feet tall, has ovate leaves 4 to l0 inches wide. The species is so names beacuse
inflorescence is always subtended by a bract. It bears a close resemblance to H. aspera in flower and fruit as
well as shape of leaves. The flat inflorescence is lavendar or mauve with many fertile flowers surrounded by the
four lobed male flower.
- 'TAMA AZIASI'
An old japanese garden variety of H. involucrata, leaves orbicular with flat flower- head markedly unsymmetrical
and irregular. The ray flowers around the margin have three or four variously-shaped sepals, pale tint of Gentain
blue, purplish or pink.
Hydrangea arborescens
- 'ANNABELLE'
Discovered in the wild near Anna, Illinois by J. C. McDaniel this cultivar has enormous (up to 30 cm across)
inflorescences of hortensia type. They contain very few fertile flowers; the pure white sterile florets are large
and well-developed. The strong, straight stems keep the shrub looking lovely even when the flower heads are
saturated with water. Blooms on new wood.
- 'GRANDIFLORA'
A cultivar or unknown origin, in cultivation since 1907, whose inflorescences are made up mainly of sterile florets
which are very small, but densely clustered together as in the "hortensia" type. Leaves green beneath, glabrous,
greenish white inflorescences up to 20 cm wide
Hydrangea panciculata
- 'GRANDIFLORA'
One of the showiest hardy large shrubs. Massive panicles of sterile florets (some attain l2 inches across and l8
inches high) appearing in summer and autumn, white fading to pink-rose. Excellent winter decoration. FCC 1869,
AGM 1969,AM 1907. Introduced from Japan 1867. Fifteen feet to thirty feet high.
Hydrangea macrophylla susp. serrata

Small robust shrub with lace-cap arched inflorescens, fertile flowers blue or reddish purple on chalk soil.

- 'GRAYSWOOD'
A Japanese cultivar imported by Mr. Chambers of Grayswood Hill Garden (England) . A large shrub or bush. Corymbs, of
the lace-cap type, are broad and well- spaced ; the sterile florets. with long denticulate sepals, change gradually
from the purest white to a superb translucent burgundy red at the end of the season, passing though all the shades of
orange pink on the way. Starts to bloom in June and does not finish until the first frost.A sunny position is
essential in order to obtain the full range of colour.
- 'PREZIOSA'
A handsome shrub with purplish-red stems. Leaves purplish tinged when young. Attractve globular heads of large
rose florets deeping to reddish -purple in the fall. A favorite of Ann Lovejoy. AM 1963, FCC l964, AGM 1973
Hydrangea querifolia (oak leaf)
- H Quercifolia
Lush grower, stoliniferious, young branches, leaf petioles, inflorenscence densely tomentose or pubescent; leaves
oval panicled bouquets with numerous white fertile flowers usually one sterile flower on each panicle, these white,
later becoming reddish. Very attractive and quite hardy. Native to Georgia, Florida and Mississippi. Hardy
to -l0° F.
- 'HARMONY'
A supple-stemmed bush with heavy full flower heads that may require some support. Leaves about 15 cm long. Like
all the quercifolia species, takes on lovely autumn colors.
- 'SNOW FLAKE'
Unique oakleaf hydrangea with multiple bracted sterile florets, which gives an apperance of double varigated flowers. Like all the quercifolia species, takes on lovely autumn colors.
